"The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say "I." And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say "I." They don't think "I." They think "we"; they think "team." They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but "we" gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done." -Peter Drucker "I have always found that the speed of the boss is the speed of the team.” -Lee Iacocca |
August 2005 - Teams Hello, We have big news this month at Entelechy Partners. After a year of research and piloting the application of coaching to teams, we have focused our findings into a specific leadership development process, The Leaders' Trek™. This month, we share some of that experience as well as some of what we have learned about using the power of teams to foster improvements in organizational performance and in individual leadership development. Our main article this month starts with the seminal work on team performance, The Wisdom of Teams by John Katzenbach and Douglas Smith and connects what we have learned in helping leaders make that wisdom practical and and applicable. This month's Coaching Case comes from one of our pilot clients for The Leaders' Trek. And, we have reviewed Patrick Lencioni's business fable, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. As always, your comments, ideas and responses are welcomed at info@entelechypartners.com. Cordially,
Groups to Teams and On to High Performance

The Leadership Bookshelf: The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team Patrick Lencioni
Patrick Lencioni has done a terrific job of making a genre of business book that is usually contrived into an effective way to bring difficult management issues home. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is a quick read, but definitely delivers. The characters and situations are believable and the scenario holds water throughout. As a result, the solutions provided are powerful because as readers, we do not dismiss them as fictional pabulum.
Coaching Cases: A Leaders' Trek™ Client Goes from Good to Great Thoma Thoma is a profitable branding and marketing agency. With that as a foundation, the principals decide it is time to "swing for the fences" and dramatically improve performance. Read what happens when the entire leadership team engages in the question: "How do we go from solid local player to executing on a larger stage?"
